Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This compound glyph for the place name Tamazolapan includes two principal features, a toad (tamazolin) in front of the cut-away view of a canal (apantli), which provides phonetic value for the locative suffix, "in (or at) the waters of." The toad is shown in profile, looking to the viewer's right. It is painted turquoise blue, and it has small circular lumps all over its body. The canal or waterway is shown in a cross-section view, trapezoidal, with a red outer lining and a yellow inner linking. the water it contains is turquoise blue with black horizontal lines of varying thickness and somewhat wavy, perhaps meant to show currents. A shell and a droplet (or another shell) splash off the top of the water.
