This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Ichpochin (“Maiden?”--attested here as a man’s name) shows a young woman's head in profile, looking toward the viewer's right. We know she is young because her hair is long and hanging down her back. (In the sedentary central areas, a woman's hair would be twisted up or braided, with the hair ends coming up above her forehead.)

The term for maiden or young woman is actually "ichpochtli." How ichpochin differs remains a question. As a baby, did his parents see him as girl-like? Did he respond more to the females in his household? Was he imagined to become a girl chaser? Was he intersexed?
